Serenity: Leaves on the Wind

-By Dan dos Santos

Dark Horse Comics has officially announced that I will be the cover artist for their upcoming miniseries 'Serenity: Leaves on the Wind'. I've been pretty excited about this project for sometime now (I'm already on cover #4), but was unable to share the news until they did.

In addition to unveiling the new series at NYCC this weekend, Dark Horse has also decided to produce a limited run of prints of this cover. This is a particularly cool treat for me, since my 'work-for-hire' agreement prohibits me from making them myself. So if you are interested in getting a signed print of this image, this weekend's NYCC is pretty much your only chance.

Stop in to Dark Horse's booth on Saturday at Noon, where I, and a ton of other really talented artists, will be signing. There is a full list of DH events HERE. I hope to see you there!

On a different note...

I thought some of you may enjoy a sneak peak into the incredibly mundane life of an Illustrator. What do you do when you're traveling thousands of miles from home to teach a workshop, and your cover job is due the same day you return home? Well, you bring your work with you and paint in the hotel room! Sadly, I've done this more times than I care to count.

A little caffeine, some cartoons, and many sleepless nights.

  3. I'm guessing thats oil? If so what as far as mediums were you able to fly with? I'm assuming TSA isn't cool with some of the more flammable of the solvents but I fly a lot and would be curious as to what I could be taking with me.

Also this looks great, thank you for sharing.

    1. You can fly with anything but solvent. I usually just bring the oils, and buy the solvent at my destination.

  4. Is the painting really so small? Considering the amount of detail and realism, I thought it would be much bigger.
    Very nice work, BTW!

    1. Yeah, smaller than I'd like too. But because I knew I had to travel with it, I kept it tiny.

    1. He is! (younger and thinner than in Castle, eheh) Serenity is a 2005 movie following the plot of Firefly series and in both the main actor was Fillion! If you don't know search for it!It's great!

  6. If you like Starbucks Refreshers you should try Amp KickStart, it works like a energy drink but without the crash and burn effect..... like the stegosaurus and palm tree too.

    1. As a rule, I avoid high fructose corn syrup. Those Starbucks Refreshers are actually surprisingly natural.

  7. So I'm guessing the wanted sign was from a previous cover you did? And then just copy, paste, transform in PS.

  8. Do you paint these on paper, or is that just a really thin panel? I'd be interested in knowing how you prep that for oil; I tried it once to a not fantastic result.

  9. Erika, I belief Dan usually paints on gessoed illustration board (Strathmore 500 series). You should be able to get that at your local art/hobby store. You have to apply the gesso your self with a brush.
