Update 9: Above The Timberline

Greg Manchess

The past two weeks have been nothing but starting and finishing painting after painting.

I managed to use half of August to sketch out complex scenes for the book, and the rest of the month was devoted to getting layers of paint down to keep moving forward through the images. Whatever image was clear in my head, I began, then let it sit while I figured out other more complex sections or calculated lighting schemes.

This will be my last update for awhile. With 30+ paintings to go, time is still an important factor, even though I got a little reprieve on the schedule. Because of it, I let up a bit this past month, but I’ll only have to make it up later. So I must stay after it, and that means extreme focus until this thing is put to bed, as they say.

It will be another year before the book returns from China and makes it to the stands. But long before that, I’ll post when the paintings are finished and share more at that time.

Thanks for hanging in there with me!

  1. It will all be worth all the hard work, Greg! Looking forward to the book!

  2. So excited for you and I can't wait for the book!

  3. I absolutely love these paintings! When can i pre-order a book! =D

  4. Thanks all! Hey Adam, the pre-order will be coming soon-ish (couple months?) and I will be hooting' and hollerin' here to let everyone know when they can order a copy!

I wish I could give them all away! It feels like a gift book to our community of artists...Like I'm sharing the story wrapped around the images.

Hmmm....maybe after the book's out, I could invite artists to add to the imagery with their own pov's...

  5. Wonderful stuff, Greg. I'm starting to guess at the plot, reading between the paintings. Somehow Jules Verne's Master of the World and the general Doc Savage/pulp universe come to mind. But you've struck a better balance with a believable airship and other design work. Bravo, dude!

  6. Thank you for sharing your progress, Greg. What a treat!
